FAQs

Do I get open studio time with my class?
Yes! Students enrolled in our 8-week class series receive 12 hours of open studio time to independently practice the skills they are learning during the class series. These hours may be used throughout the class series and up to one week after the final class session to finish work such as glazing. During the final class session, new pieces should not be started, as class shelves must be cleared by the end of the class series. During the final class, work need to be placed on the “Ready to Bisque Fire” or “Ready to Glaze Fire” shelves.
What should I bring to class?
We recommend bringing an apron, towel, and your pottery tools. Potters Union aprons and Kemper toolkits are also available for purchase at the studio.
Do I need my own pottery tools?
Yes. Students enrolled in our 8 week courses are expected to have their own basic pottery tools. If you don’t have a set, Kemper toolkits are available for purchase at the studio.
What happens if Potters Union cancels my class?
While we make every effort to hold classes and workshops as scheduled, occasionally a program may need to be canceled, postponed, or rescheduled due to low enrollment, instructor illness or unavailability, severe weather, emergencies, or other unforeseen circumstances. If Potters Union cancels a class or workshop, participants will receive a full refund of registration fees paid directly to Potters Union. If the program is rescheduled, participants may instead be given the option to transfer their registration to the new date.
What happens after my 8 week class ends?
On the last day of class, your student shelf must be cleared of all personal items, tools, clay, and pottery, and pieces must be moved to the appropriate Ready to Bisque or Ready to Glaze fire shelf. You have one week after your final class to come in and glaze bisqued pieces. Finished pieces should be picked up within two weeks after these are fired. Open studio hours must be used by the last class session. You are welcome to purchase additional open studio hours for up to a week after the class has ended to come in and finish glazing pieces.
What happens if I miss a class?
We do not offer make up sessions. If you miss a class, you’ll receive 3 hours of open studio time as a one time courtesy so you can catch up on your work.
What happens if a piece breaks in the kiln?
Pieces can break at different stages of the process for various reasons. We cannot guarantee results in every firing. The important thing is to enjoy the process and keep creating!
I’m new to pottery. Are there beginner-friendly classes?
Definitely! We offer 8-week Beginner to Wheel Throwing series designed specifically for beginners. This series gives you a solid foundation in pottery basics with plenty of hands-on guidance in a small, supportive class setting.
How should I prepare for my pottery class?
Dress comfortably in clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty. Tie back long hair, trim your nails and leave jewelry like rings, bracelets and necklaces at home. Please bring a towel, apron and a basic tool kit. We also sell Potters Union aprons and Kemper toolkits at the studio.
How many students are typically in a class?
Our wheel throwing classes have up to 10 participants, and our handbuilding classes usually have between 10-12 students, so there’s plenty of opportunity for hands-on guidance.
Is clay included with my class?
Yes! One bag (25lbs) of Standard 112 clay with grog is included with your class registration. This should be enough to cover the 8-week series. If you want to try a different clay body you are welcome to upgrade your class clay to a bag of Laguna B-Mix 5 or Standard 266 for a small fee.
Do you offer classes for children?
Our classes and workshops at the Studio are for ages 15 and up. At the Shop we offer 4-week kids classes on Tuesdays and Wednesday (Little Potters).
Can I take my greenware pieces with me and then return to fire them?
No. Pieces must be completed at the studio, using studio clay. If you choose to take your creations with you, we cannot receive them back for firing.
What is the cancellation policy for classes?
Cancellations must be made at least 7 days prior to the first session for a store credit to use toward another offering or merchandise. No monetary refunds are provided. The credit does not expire. If you are traveling to attend a workshop or other program at Potters Union, we strongly encourage you to make refundable travel arrangements and/or consider appropriate travel insurance. Potters Union is not responsible for airfare, lodging, transportation, meals, lost wages, or other expenses incurred in connection with attending a class, workshop, or event, including when a program must be canceled, postponed, or rescheduled.
What is your inclement weather policy?
Potters Union may close the studio at owners’ discretion due to inclement weather based on Federal, State and Local Government guidance. We only close the studio if we think that conditions are unsafe for members, students and instructors to travel to the studio. Any classes or workshops scheduled on days when the studio is closed because of inclement weather will be rescheduled for a future date. We will announce all inclement weather closings on our Instagram and by email to the email address on file.
Can I bring my own clay?
No. All clay must be purchased through Potters Union to ensure it is compatible with our firing programs.
What is Little Potters?
Little Potters is a four-week series for kids aged 7-12 that meets every Tuesday or every Wednesday. Each two-hour class session is led by one of our instructors, who will teach kids the fundamentals of handbuilding through a different pottery project that focuses on a different technique each week. During the final class, students will glaze all their pieces. Finished pottery will be ready for pickup approximately two weeks after the series ends.
What are open studio hours?
Students enrolled in our 8-week class series receive 12 hours of open studio time to independently practice the skills they are learning during the class series. These hours may be used throughout the class series and up to one week after the final class session to finish work such as trimming or glazing. After the final class, new pieces should not be started, as class shelves must be cleared by the end of the class series. After the last class, work need to be placed on the “Ready to Bisque Fire” or “Ready to Glaze Fire” shelves.
